STAR TREK: DEFIANCE|ALLIANCE
PROLOGUE PART: 1
MARCH 28, 2294
STARFLEET ACADEMY GENERAL HOSPTIAL, SAN FRANCISCO.
(NOTE: Tiberius Arthur Uhura belongs to :iconwolfbreed: )

The day would turn out bitter sweet for Admiral James T. Kirk. He sat in a waiting room at the hospital, his hands holding his head up on his knees. Spock and Uhura had accompanied him with their two sons, Sevik, still just under a year old and Ty, their eldest.

Ty sat hitting his legs against the chair. All this waiting was boring him to death. Uhura placed a steady hand on her sons shoulder, cradling Sevik in her other arm.

"This is not the time. The Admiral is going through a rather difficult time right now and…"

"It's alright." Jim finally spoke, his voice cracked, cutting her off. "He's just being a kid."

Jim's eyes didn't stare away from the two huge doors that lead to various operation rooms and the triage for the E.R. His left leg was twitching frantically. Spock examined his friend in concern.

"You're over reacting, Jim."

"I'm scared, Spock. They ushered us out of the room so quickly, without so much as giving a hint as to why!"

"There's obviously a logical reason as to…"

Both Uhura and Jim stared at Spock with stern faces.

"…right, this isn't the time. I apologize."

"…Admiral Kirk?" A woman's voice called out.

"Yes?" Jim stood up immediately, approaching her at a fast pace, Spock following behind. The nurse sighed, having a hard time keeping eye contact with Jim. She placed a soft hand on the Admiral's shoulder.

"Well?!" Jim started to get inpatient. "My wife and the baby…are they alright?!"

"Admiral, you are well aware of the possible problems that could have arisen with your wife giving birth, because her frame is so un-naturally tiny. In most cases, the pregnancy goes smoothly and the birth as well but…" the nurse drew in a large breath of air. "I'm afraid that wasn't the case this time around. I'm sorry Admiral, but your wife didn't survive the birth."

Jim grasped Spock's arm tightly, his eyes starting to fill with water. Spock ignored the reaction, knowing this really was not the time to protest.

"…the…child too?" he gulped.

Suddenly the doctor who had been helping Saraa through the birth came out with a pink bundle in his arms. He slowly approached Jim, whose eyes shot open when he heard the faint cry coming from the small bundle.

"Luckily…" The nurse continued. "You're daughter was able to pull through. We had some difficulties getting her to breathe at first but everything is okay now; she's a perfectly healthy baby girl." A sad smile came across her face. "Congratulations, Admiral."

The doctor placed the baby girl in Jim's already eager open arms. Uhura grabbed Ty's hand and came rushing up as best she could with Sevik in her arms.

"Oh, Jim…" she gasped. "She's beautiful!"

Jim allowed the streams of tears fall down his face, a huge smile plastered on his face as he rocked and bounced his little girl in his arms.

"Let me see! Let me see!" Ty begged, jumping up and down. Spock picked him up and leaned over for Ty to look.

"She's kinda scrawny looking" Ty wrinkled his nose.

"Tiberius Arthur Uhura!" Spock scowled at him with half emotion. Ty sinked in his fathers hold.

"Sowwy…"

Jim only chuckled at his innocence. The little girl still wined but Jim's rocking seemed to be calming her down. She opened her mouth, yawning, now only making faint noises.

"Shhhh, it's going to be alright. Daddy's here…" Jim brought her closer to his chest, stroking her forehead with his index finger.

"She has your eyes…" Spock smiled as best as his Vulcan logic would let him. Uhura looked down at her youngest and chuckled.

"Looks like you have a girl friend, Sevik."

Spock and Jim exchanged awkward looks, both putting on goofy smiles. Uhura frowned. Ty stuck his finger in his mouth pretending the gag.

"Oh you guys are no fun!" she sighed.

"Now…" The doctor finally spoke. "I would like to keep her here overnight, just as a precaution. You can come back in the morning to…"

"I'll stay here with her." Jim interrupted him, looking at him seriously.

"Of course." The doctor smirked. "The nurse here will take her back to the nursery where she will be monitored."

Jim just stared between the doctor and the nurse, who had her arms out to take the girl. He very hesitantly placed his daughter in her arms. The nurse smiled sweetly at him.

"Don't worry, Admiral. She's in good hands, I assure you. Now if you would follow me, I'll show you where the nursery is. There's a window that looks inside, so you can keep an eye on her all night with us if you like."

Spock, Uhura and Ty followed Jim and the nurse only a few feet down the hall. The nurse went through a door, while Jim had his face plastered against the glass. He watched as she gently placed her in one of the small cribs, hooking up a small vital monitor to her arm.

Jim smiled, his eyes soft as he watched his daughter slowly starting to doze off. He was caught off guard by a small tugging on his pant leg.

"Uhm?" He looked down to see Ty looking up at him.

"So, whatcha gonna call her?"

Uhura and Spock looked at Jim, curious as well. The nurse suddenly came out with a PADD in hand.

"Have you thought of a name yet, Admiral Kirk?"

"I just asked that…" Ty scowled at her, crossing his arms. Jim looked back in at his daughter, he hands resting against the glass loosely. He smiled having figured out the perfect name.

"Calius…" he finally spoke. "Calius Saraa Kirk."

The nurse smiled and jotted down the name for her records before going back inside the nursery to tend to the other infants.

"That's a beautiful name, Jim." Uhura smiled at her friend.

"It's weird…" Ty said with a blank face. Uhura smacked him lightly on the back on the head, glaring down at him.

"Well it is…" he crossed his arms again in protest.

"I think its best we leave Jim alone with Calius and head back home. Besides, it's almost bed time for you young man." Uhura grabbed her sons' hand.

"I'll come for you in the morning, Jim." Spock offered.

Jim turned his head to him briefly and nodded.

"I'd appreciate that." He smiled, and then turned to Uhura and the kids. "Thank you for coming with us today…" Jim sighed sadly. Uhura nodded before heading out to the car.

Spock placed a firm hand on his friends shoulder.

"It didn't all turn out so bad in the end." Spock stared in at Calius, placing his hand up against the glass in the Vulcan greeting.

"May she live long and prosper."

Jim smiled brightly at his friend. They both exchanged looks before Spock followed after Uhura.

Jim turned his attention back on his new born child. He was getting a second chance at fatherhood and this time he owed it to himself and now his deceased wife to not mess this one up.

"I'll always be here for you." He whispered softly. "I promise."

When Spock held up the salute and said "May she live, long, and prosper." It killed me! So sweet!
